Motor Turtle
Making a Turtle Move
It seems like a small rite of passage in modern design to make something involving with a minimal, Alegria art style. Though I normally opt for more dirty, and rough illustrations, I decided to challenge myself and see if I can do something a bit more clean.
Although Alegria art typically features human characters with longer limbs and larger hands and feet, I wanted to deviate slightly by having an turtle character that felt more proportional in general.

Setting the Scene
Knowing that I wanted to work with simple shapes in Illustrator, and having a number of references to choose from, I got started illustrating. Normally I like to work in black and white and put an emphasis on contrasting values.
By the end, I was close to having a really nice style frame to work with! The next thing to do before animation was finding the right colors for the job.
Color Me Impressed
Though most Alegria art has a brighter, more inviting feel, I'm almost never happy with just staying within the confines of what is expected. I wanted to go with a scene that had a darker, night-time feel. Usually I start with a small color palette and make adjustments in After Effects to tweak and dial things in--making sure to preserve a decent contrast, but also preserve my original vision.
After that, it was just a matter of making everything move, and adding a song on top.
