Grumpy Phonograph

Feeling Grumpy

A love of vinyl in the modern age can feel like a relic of the past. A defiant need of clinging to something the world has long since moved on from. The crackle of the needle, the weight of the record in your hands, the ritual of flipping to the other side (or B-side to the hipsters). It’s all so tangible and deliberate, in a time when music is instant, and just a click away.

The sense of being just a little out of step with the relentless march of technology, was the inspiration for this piece. A small tribute to the warmth of analog in a digital world. The beauty of taking things slow when everything else moves fast.

One step forward...

Sometimes the creative process can feel a bit of a tug-of-war. I had originally made a walk cycle for this little creation, but didn't feel like it captured the character very well.

Walk this way

This version captured the bitterness of the phonograph a lot more. Just seeing him stomp around, helps me relate to him so much more.

Subtle Dimensions

At first glance, this little guy might seem simple—just another illustration, a flat image in a sea of visuals. But look again. Something shifts. There's a depth, a whisper of dimension that wasn't obvious at first. The effect is subtle, almost imperceptible, like a trick of the light or a fleeting shadow. Blink, and you might miss it entirely.

You'd be forgiven for not catching it right away. It's okay. I forgive you.

That's one grumpy phonograph
